The Expanded Bible

I received The Expanded Bible from Thomas Nelson to review. It’s a version of the Bible that includes word meanings (alternate words as well as explanations) and historical/cultural info right in the text.

My first reaction to the Bible is that is is very clean and functional. Lots of white space on the side for notes and it’s easy to read. I found it very interesting right from the first verse I read! The actual verses are in bold and the notes are normal. LOTS of notes! It might be a bit tedious to just sit down and read through a chapter. It seems to be great to read a chapter at a time. As far as translation goes… I’m no expert so I can’t give any thoughts on that, but it is simpler than KJV but not as conversational as NIV.

It’s hard covered (also comes in soft cover) and should stand up well to use. Although I hate dust jackets and that will disappear quickly. The whole look is fresh and clean. It would make a great Bible for teens or adults. With the alternate words anyone reading it will have the added advantage of increasing their vocabulary!

Overall.. I really like it and will be using it in my reading.
